Round Raku Necklace
This necklace features a stunning raku cabachon created by Maku Studio. It doesn't need much embellishing. I ceramic centerpiece has a multicolored metallic surface with parts of the natural ceramic color.
Because the raku cabochon has so much character on its own, the design is kept simple. A few rows of beads are added to complement the tones in the ceramic and gently highlight its color and texture.
Raku is a traditional ceramic firing technique that originated in Japan during the 16th century. What makes raku distinctive is the firing and cooling process. The ceramic piece is removed from the kiln while it is still extremely hot and then placed into a container filled with combustible materials such as sawdust or paper. When the materials ignite, they create a reduction atmosphere that affects the glazes and the clay body. This process produces unpredictable metallic flashes, smoky patterns, and crackle effects which are created when smoke enters tiny cracks in the glaze as the piece cools. Because the results depend on heat, timing, and the reduction process, no two raku pieces are exactly alike.
The pendant hangs from an 18 inch dark silver metallic leather cord and includes a 2 inch extension chain for adjustability. The back of the pendant is lined with durable ultrasuede that feels soft and comfortable against the skin.
